In the early 1970s I bound a small leather
blank book of handmade paper. It
was titled Musical Theory, and for a couple of decades was used
for jotting down riffs, lyrics, and thoughts. In 2012 it was acquired by the
Special Collections department of Yale Uniiversity's Robert B. Haas
Family Arts Library. It was included in their exhibition,
Jazz and the
Book Arts, February 24 — June 16, 2014.
Currently I am producing a book based on this manuscript, to be issued in Limited
and Deluxe editions, and a unique copy bound to a Musical Chair. These will launch as
the Featured Artist exhibition at the Center for Book Arts in New
York City in October, 2014.

The original Musical Theory manuscript in Jazz and the
Book Arts exhibit at Yale, 2014.
A page from the section "Phoneme Riffs." These
can be sung, played on an instrument, clapped . . . Each evokes a genre, like
Funk, Cajun, Punk, Doo-wop. Try repeating one of the above riffs several
times without pause..

Above: from the section "Songs and Band Names". Every copy of the book includes an original
limited edition record jacket printed letterpress in 1981
at the Center for Book Arts for the never released recording of I Wanna Be Riveted, performed
by Old Man Rivet and the Rivetheads at the Allan Stone Gallery, May 5,
1981. The song title and band name came from Musical Theory. Photo of
Minsky as Old Man Rivet by Peter Seidler, jacket design by Pat Gorman. The sleeve is
suspended in a double-sided mat. |
The Musical Chair
One copy of the Deluxe Edition will be chained to a chair, now under
construction, that includes wooden organ pipes, a compressor and regulated tank in the seat, and
electromagnetic valves connected to a keyboard and foot controls so the reader
can play the compositions in the book. There will be a brief performance of the
chair at the Center for Book Arts during the exhibition
openng, and another during a lecture on Material Meets Metaphor in October, 2014.
A full
length performance will be presented as a separate event in November. To the
right is the first pencil sketch of the chair. Below are snapshots of the
pipes. The other photos show the sides and planks, which were cut
from one cherry tree.
This is my second book chair. In 2009 I
built an electric chair and chained to it to a copy of
Freedom of Choice : Three Poems of
Love and Death by Lucie Brock-Broido. It was acquired by the
Lloyd Sealy Library of John Jay College
of Criminal Justice. |
