Aboard the
Mavis
by Richard Markham
New York: Dodd, Mead &. Co., 1880
In
1878 a book cover appeared that was
decades ahead of the art movements
incorporated in its design. We see
elements of Constructivism, Futurism,
Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism,
and Graffiti. Over the following three
years several other titles, primarily
juveniles, were issued by various
publishers in Boston and New York that
have similar artistic foundations.
This book is
a fully color illustrated essay on who
the artist may be. It focuses on John
La Farge and his student, Sarah Wyman
Whitman.
